Dealing with dogs that chase or threaten you
If a dog seems like it will attack you, here are some things you can do:
- Shout something like
NO
, STAY
, or SIT
.
- Avoid eye contact.
- Turn and bike out of its territory.
- Use an air horn.
- Turn on an ultrasonic emitter specially designed to repel dogs.
- Get off your bike and hold it between you and the dog.
- If you have recurring problems with an animal, switch to another route or talk with the dog's owner.
Although it risks enraging a dog, I guess you could physically attack it as a last resort:
- Squirt its face using your water bottle.
- If you have already talked with the dog's owner, you could carry a caustic solution of some kind in a dedicated water bottle you never drink from, and squirt the dog with it. You are risking a lawsuit if you do this.
- If you keep a mini air pump on your bike frame, use it to hit the eye or nose of the dog.
- Carry a chemical dog repellent. If you are also worried about human attackers, consider pepper spray.
If a chasing dog gets alongside or in front of you, it may instinctively attempt to herd you by cutting across your path or lunging at you. To avoid crashing, I guess you have to be prepared to stop.
